1974 ‘Nationwide’ short documentary on the Teddy Boys

Here’s a nice little 8-minute-plus documentary from 1974 on the Teddy Boy rock’n’roll revival and the Black Raven scene. It from the early evening news show ‘Nationwide’ which aired on the BBC on Thursday the 07.02.1974 (six months before the famous London Rock’n’roll Show in Wmebley). It features dancing at the Black Raven, memories of 50s Teds from Marty Wilde, Billy Fury and  Bob Ackland, the Black Raven landlord. The reporter Martin Young presents with the tongue-in-cheek style that was typical of ‘Nationwide’ documentaries but went a step further by ‘recreating’ the story of his older 18-19-year-old brother ‘Vince’ in the 1950s, “one of the harder Teds of our neighbourhood”, cue a black-and-white film showing ‘Vince’ leaving his house to drive a Consul over to the Black Raven to dance with other Teds.

Well-known pic outside Black Raven of Sunglasses Ron. Regulars outside the Black Raven on Bishopsgate, in London 1974

With left to right: Thomas (Gino) Charalambous, Steve Golly, Ron Staples, Norman Mascot, Bob Who and Del Mascot. A great pub and a great period in Ted History
Many thanks to Raymond Flight and Spot Lambert for the names of the Teds.
