I’d heard that he was going to cover Wilbert Harrison’s “Let’s work together.”, but Canned Heat got it first, so he switched to “I hear you knocking.”, which has almost the same chord progressions, at the last minute. Another song with almost the same chord progressions (in the chorus) that was out (at least in the USA) in early 1971 was “Sweet Mary” by Wadsworth Mansion. I used to confuse the two. Edmunds’s solo album Rockpile in 1970.
Between 1976 and 1980, Rockpile – on an erratic basis – became the name of a band that featured Dave Edmunds or Nick Lowe and sometimes others.
It was basically pub rock. I’ve only included him here because of the fact that the video has such a rocking crowd.

YTcomm This was performed on 9th January 1979, studio 2, Thames Television – I still have my original ticket. Im sitting on the stage. NEVER thought I would see this on the net! Thanx for posting and bringing back some very happy memories 🙂

Here he is performing on January 9 1979 for the Kenny Everett Show.
Most of Edmunds’s offerings are of a dire pub rock variety. Some approach rock’n’roll acceptability such as ‘I hear you knocking’.
Edmunds had a UK Christmas Number 1 single in 1970 with ‘I hear you knockin’ (released in October 1970), a Smiley Lewis cover, which he came across while producing Shakin’ Stevens and the Sunsets’ first album entitled A Legend (Rockin’ Louie sang it on Shaky’s album Legend released in January 1970 along with two others – ‘down on the farm’ and ‘down yonder we go ballin” – which accounts for the confusion as to who sang it on that album).

It sold over three million copies, and was awarded a gold disc. Edmunds had intended to record Wilbert Harrison’s “Let’s Work Together”, but when he was beaten to that song by Canned Heat, he adapted the arrangement he intended to use for it to “I Hear You Knocking”, producing a highly original remake.
