Mid-1980s rock’n’roll scene in France

Almost in the same way as the rock’n’roll craze of the fifties became known as the sixties (annĂ©es soixante) in French, because of the time lag which saw rock’n’roll onlrevival y take off as a mass phenomenon in 1960, the British 1970s rock’n’roll revival was almost a wholly 1980s phenomenon in France. If the 1970s was less welcoming for rock’n’roll in France, then the tables had turned by the early 1980s asfar as the rockin’ scene was concerned. It too faded before the end of the 1980s, but here we present some footage of the rockin’ revivalists of 1980s France.

First here are twelve minutes of amateur footage showing a Crazy Cavan concert in the small town of Redon, in eastern Brittany, on Saturday 15th February 1986. Looking back many years later its nice to have a lot of footage of how a rockin’ night panned out in the mid 1980s when the rockin’ scene was still steaming in France (unlike in Britain where it had quietened some years previously). And – despite the sometimes blurred footage – we get to see the eclectism of the diehard rock’n’rollers : teds and rockabillies, talking in groups and sometimes dancing before and after the appearance of the Rhythm Rockers. We see the band in the dressing room signing autographs, taking pictures and trying to communicate with the fans despite language differences. The boys outnumber the girls, but they’re there too!

Secondly, another concert at the village of Saint-Perreux (Morbihan) a suburb of Redon from 3rd November 1984.
