Hector, the French Sutch

Is there such a thing as a Screamin’ Lord Sutch in any other country but England ? Apparently, yes, and in France he went under the name of Hector, his backing band being the Médiators. Of course, both Lord Sutch and Hector were inspired by the original schlock rocker, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.

Born in Paris in October 1946, and named Jean-Pierre Kalfon, he would discover rock’n’roll aged 13 in 1959 whilst holidaying with his parents at the seaside resort of Dinard, Brittany.

There have been few renditions of ‘whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on’ that are musically as good whilst at the same time being performed so placidly on boat on a calm lake on a grey day while swans and other waterfowl graciously glide along. This one comes from Hector’s second EP of 1963.

Performance of ‘il faut saisir sa chance’ from the film ‘Cherchez l’Idole’ (1964).
