Here’s an energetic Sha-na-na performance in Skansen, Sweden in 1972
1:04 Shake Rattle N Roll (Rich Joffe sings) 3:35 Jailhouse Rock (Tony Santini sings) 6:54 Teenager In Love ([Owww so cute and adorable Bruno,] Bruno Clarke sings) 8:37 Whole Lotta Shakin (Scott Simon sings) 12:59 Sea Cruise (Johnny Contardo sings) 14:31 Rock N Roll Is Here To Stay (Scott Simon sings)
Sounds similar to the Dead End / East Side Kids of the movies where there was an underlying toughness and darkness to the characters, and then after a few personnel changes they were “softened up” to the comedy-oriented Bowery Boys – which I am reminded of in terms of how Sha Na Na’s persona was “cleaned up” once the TV show came along.
It was the hippie/counterculture era. At the time of this recording, 10 of 12 were either Columbia University students or recent graduates. Lenny and Johnny were the only non Columbians. | OTHER COMMENT Chico and Dirty Dan weren’t Columbia alumni; along with Lennie and Johnny, this meant 40% of the lineup that was in place for the TV show weren’t Columbia.
@RAInterActive June 1972 – they played The Crystal Palace Bowl (Croydon). I was 15 and remember them running through the crowd in their gold lame suits. Beach Boys, Joe Cocker, Melanie and Richie Havens on the same day,
