‘Sunglasses’ Ron Staples (1944-97)

Who was Sunglasses Ron ? A character who was London’s ambassador of a genuine rock’n’roll lifestyle as well as an ubiquitous presence on the London teddy boy scene of the the 1970s revival. I can do no better than to send you to the excellent piece on him on the Edwardian Teddy Boy site.

Sunglasses Ron, Southend, mid 1970s

Here are a few more testimonies about him gleaned from post on the web. EXPAND

Here follows a nice tribute tribute to ‘ King Of The Teds’ Sunglasses Ron Staples by *Rockinglee who was taken under Ron’s drape. We used to meet in London’s clubs n pubs like the Black Raven, Edwardian, Burnell, Swan, Adam & Eve, Hackney Hospital, Royalty, Tigers Head, and the Towers to name a few. Standing at the bar with right hand full ! Ron used to tell everyone that he used to bounce *Rockinglee up and down on his knee when the latter was an infant !

*Rockinglee thanks his friends Handsome Louis Bray, Cliff Edmunds, Tony Martin and Graham Allen & John Dodd for the cartoons.
